NBC and MSNBC correspondent Antonia Hylton claimed Sunday that the anti-Israel protests at Columbia University, which are so extreme that a campus rabbi told Jewish students to leave for their own safety, were actually “peaceful.”
Our team spent long hours reporting on and around Columbia’s campus on Thursday & Friday. I want to clear some stuff up. I didn’t see a single instance of violence or aggression on the lawn or at the student encampment. The student-led protest was peaceful and often very quiet…The protests include an illegal encampment that was removed by the New York Police Department and has returned in defiance of university authorities and the law.
Hylton claimed that the only violent confrontations and extremist rhetoric took place outside the gates of campus, among those who had been barred from entering, and those who were not actually Columbia or Barnard students. The only moments of conflict or aggression I witnessed took place beyond the gates, out on Broadway Ave. I repeatedly approached people in that crowd. Every single person I approached told me they were NOT a Columbia or Barnard student. None of them had badges to get on campus.
