On Wednesday morning, a crew exhumed the vault containing the casket Shirley Wilkerson was buried in at Heritage Memorial Cemetery in Prichard. Her daughter, Ti
ffany Wilkerson, says she had to watch it being lifted out of the ground from outside the gated cemetery on Cheeseman Avenue.
"They don't want you to see what's going on. You know, telling us to get back, and that's my mom in there," said Tiffany Wilkerson."JoJo, the funeral director, communicated with me that water was in the vault. They were going to try to take care of that before they pulled her up," said Tiffany. The crew then drove her mother to her final resting place across the street and reinterred her at Whispering Pines Cemetery.to move 14 people buried at Heritage Memorial Cemetery to Whispering Pines Cemetery at no cost to the families. A source familiar with the case tells NBC 15 News Shirley Wilkerson's vault is the first to be exhumed to comply with that order.
"I feel like she was treated very poorly. I feel like she was handled badly. And I just hate it. I hate it," said Taylor Wilkerson, Shirly Wilkerson's granddaughter. Taylor and Tiffany Wilkerson say reliving their loved one's funeral stirs up many emotions, including anger at those who put them in this agonizing position.
