Washington made another move to bolster its scouting department by hiring Brad Ciolek from the Baltimore Orioles as senior director of amateur scouting.
The Washington Nationals are brining in another outside voice to take on a significant role in their scouting department by hiring Brad Ciolek to be their new senior director of amateur scouting, a person familiar with the situation confirmed to The Washington Post. Ciolek had most recently served as the Baltimore Orioles’ Director of Draft Operations.

The Nationals have been tasked this offseason with revamping both their amateur and international scouting departments by replacing some familiar names. Johnny DiPuglia, Washington’s international scouting director and one of General Manager Mike Rizzo’s closest confidants,in early September. Kris Kline, who had been the Nationals’ scouting director since 2009, was moved to a new position as a special assistant to Rizzo as a scout on the pro side.to be the team’s next scouting director.
Haas and Ciolek overlapped in Baltimore. Ciolek joined the Orioles in 2011 as a member of their player development staff, left in 2012, then returned in 2013. Haas joined the Orioles in 2012 and spent seven seasons there before leaving to join the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019 as a special assignment scout.
In both Haas and Ciolek, the Nationals are bringing in a pair of outside voices with connections to two organizations that have had much recent success drafting and developing young talent. The Diamondbacks, Haas’s most recent former team, will meet the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS starting on Monday.
