Animal shelters across Canada will bring potential pets into local PetSmart stores during National Adoption Week, through March 12.
The experts at PetSmart advise that potential pet parents keep an open mind. If you are looking for a dog, for example, but work in an office, you may find a mature animal — content to be home alone during the day and needing less exercise — a better fit for your household than a puppy.
Heidi Marston, director of pet placement initiatives at PetSmart Charities, knows the benefits of adopting an animal with special needs. She has a Great Dane named Gatsby, who is blind and deaf. Gatsby quickly learned his way around Marston’s house with no problem, bonded with her other dog, and has his own special way of communicating.
Marston said Monday, “Gatsby brings such a calming and loving energy everywhere he goes, it’s unbelievable how a dog that can’t see or hear can communicate with those around him like that.”Article content“He has shown me to go into situations with an open mind because had I just walked by Gatsby and missed out on the opportunity to get to know him, my life would not have been as rich as it is now.
