in the unincorporated county lands along the edge of the San Fernando Valley which are increasingly threatened by wildfire. The project includes clearing flammable brush in a 10-foot swath along each side of local roads, making it easier for first responders to reach the area if there is a fire — and making it easier to leave if the area is evacuated.
A major project through which Zappia hoped to find better ways to address climate change was his work with other scholars who are looking back in time at the practices of indigenous people, an ambitious effort to map North America’s food system in the past 1,000 years. He was practical, noting last year that another sustainability project he was involved in — growing vegetable crops inside a freight container at CSUN — would “provide food for our dining halls and student house.”
