The public will get a peak into the origins of the universe Tuesday when a panel of NASA scientists releases the first images from the James Webb Space Telescope. Here's how to watch.
The images, until now glimpsed only by a handful of agency administrators, are a feat of engineering decades in the making. More than 10,000 people have worked on the telescope, some of whom have spent their entire careers waiting for this moment.
“What I have seen moved me as a scientist, an engineer and a human being,” Pamela Melroy, NASA’s deputy administrator and a former astronaut, told reporters at a press conference in June.Scientists overcame a series of challenges to deploy the telescope, among the most complex projects ever attempted by NASA and its partners, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.
, enabling scientists to study the birth of stars and probe atmospheres of planets outside our solar system for signs of ozone, water or carbon dioxide. Construction began in 2004, but Congress nearly canceled the project in 2011, after years of delays and cost overruns.
