Ahead of his Hollywood film debut in Babylon, Mexican actor Diego Calva voices angst over the depiction of his home country in Narcos: Mexico.

Diego Calva criticizes Narcos: Mexico for its depiction of his home country. Narcos: Mexico is the spinoff series based on Narcos, one of Netflix's premiere original series that put the streaming service's original content on the map. Debuting in 2015, the original Narcos famously tracked the triumphs and travails of Pablo Escobar's drug-running operation in Colombia.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Calva is speaking out against the show that delivered him to American audiences. While recognizing the show's quality and cultural importance, Calva, who appeared in season 3 of Narcos: Mexico, nevertheless feels that the show played into harmful stereotypes of his home country, according to his interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“There’s a moment in your career as an actor that you really can’t choose your roles. You are just grateful that you’re having a job, and Narcos is a great show. But in my case, it’s a little hard because the way they put the story of my country, I don’t agree at all. There’s a lot of truth, and that’s amazing, but there’s a lot of lies, too. I think my country doesn’t need more narco culture and making these guys heroes.

Beyond problems of representation, Narcos: Mexico is also quite notorious for its historical inaccuracies. Events in the show are moved to different years. Murders of major characters are fabricated. Narcos: Mexico plays fast and loose with the facts, which can be seen as insensitive to those who lived through the events.

What's Next For Diego Calva While Calva might have problems with Narcos: Mexico, his upward trajectory in Hollywood might soon see him not having to appear in anything he doesn't support. Calva is set to make his American film debut in Damien Chazelle's Babylon, and his performance is already garnering Oscar buzz.
