Naperville District 203 class sizes range from 15 to 28 students in elementary schools, 18 to 26 for junior highs and 17 to 32 at the two high schools, according to numbers recently presented to the school board.

The numbers for the 2021-22 school year were compiled at the board’s request after questions arose over whether classes were meeting the policy that calls for 20 to 30 students per class at the elementary level, 25 to 35 in middle school and a minimum of 15 in high school.Superintendent Dan Bridges, speaking at a board meeting in June, said there hasn’t been a lot of research on the benefits of larger vs. smaller class sizes.

Some of the successes have been “improved student engagement, better student-teacher relationships obviously it has the potential to reduce workload on educators,” Bridges said. Board member Donna Wandke said the district should be more consistent across grade levels with its class sizes as they currently have a wide range.

Board member Amanda McMillen said she’d like to see additional research on classes in the district with aides in them, and how enrollment and the amount of space in each school plays a role.
