Crews working to remove a downed tree in Sydney following post-tropical storm Fiona. Provincial officials said on Thursday that despite the huge destruction from the storm last year, it won't mean additional resources will be committed to the region ahead of time. CAPE BRETON POST FILE.SYDNEY, N.S. — Nova Scotia emergency management officials said while they’re aware of Cape Breton’s vulnerability to major storms, their central focus will be response rather than preparation.
“Whatever does happen, we will respond in the area it does happen. We’re prepared to help wherever it’s needed in Nova Scotia,” Lohr said. It’s still unclear how Franklin will impact the region. As for action before a storm, the province said municipalities are responsible for creating emergency plans and leading local disaster responses — in which the province can assist.
The federal government also responded to Fiona’s damage. More than 100 members of the Canadian Armed Forces were sent to Cape Breton for cleanup efforts. Even a week after Fiona, Cape Breton Regional Municipality pleaded for continued support beyond provincial and federal crews that had already arrived.
