Americans who fly in drop plenty of money when they're fishing Atlantic salmon, but stock levels are important to that business, and the local who like to cast a line. Luckily Barb Dean Simmons has the latest stock numbers to fill in the picture.

Salmon angling is big business for the outfitting industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. During a typical summer salmon fishing season, 2,000 to 4,000 anglers, the majority from the U.S., travel to the island and Labrador to cast a line into a salmon river. - File photoHundreds of sports fishing enthusiasts from the United States are looking forward to casting a line in a Newfoundland and Labrador river this year and the adrenalin rush when an Atlantic Salmon grabs hold.

The latest assessment by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans shows that most of the 21 rivers they monitored in 2022 had fewer salmon returning. There are several factors, said Kelly, noting things like changing water temperatures, sea ice cover, changes in the zooplankton and predation. This summer Kelly will be working on a project to track young salmon from south coast rivers. Using electronic transmitters implanted in fish, and receivers positioned at sea, he and his colleagues hope to gather data to show whether salmon that swim past aquaculture sites may have a lower survival rate. For the 2022 salmon stock assessment, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans used data collected from 21 rivers around the province.

“It is possible that there are some individual populations that may be under higher pressure but we don’t have sufficient information to quantify that,” he said. Besides, he said, smolts that leave the rivers on the island usually spend only one year at sea. Greenland is just too far for them to travel to back in one year.DFO and various interest groups, including anglers, will meet soon to review the stock assessment and offer suggestions for management.
