A 46-year-old New Jersey truck driver was charged with murder in Maryland after the body of a woman was found on the floorboard of the vehicle following a chase near a Costco distribution center early Sunday, authorities said.showed up at the Costco distribution center in Monrovia at about 1:30 a.m. after getting a report that a driver later identified as Matthew S. Watley was under the influence and broke the window of his own truck.
Deputies placed spike stops in front of and behind the truck after Watley was “argumentative” and wouldn’t speak with them, officials said. Watley then attempted to flee in the truck and continued driving even after his tires went over the spike strips, the sheriff’s office said. He stopped at the exit lane of the distribution center, but still refused to get out of the truck despite repeated request, officials said.
A short time later, deputies used peppery spray on him, but Watley remained in the truck cab. Finally, deputies broke a different window, used a stun gun on him and took him into custody.Watley, of Sicklerville, is charged with first and second-degree murder. He was being treated at a local hospital while being guarded by deputies.Monrovia is about 40 miles west of Baltimore and 40 miles northwest of Washington D.C.
