Built in 1825, the Masonic lodge in Madison will be preserved and renovated into a senior center.
The Madison council approved an ordinance to spend $125,000 from its Open Space Recreation & Historic Preservation Trust Fund and to use a $1 million donation from resident Martin Heller to buy the building for $1,125,000. It will be used, in part, as a senior center.
He contacted the town and worked with the council, mayor and business administrator to “help along with the acquisition.” The two-story, Federal style building is 7,900 square feet and sits on a .72-acre lot with about 35 parking spaces. It’s located next to Madison Junior School. Attempts to reach the Masons for comment were not successful. And the listing agent for the property declined to comment.
The building will be dedicated to Heller’s son, Mark -- who was born with a brain injury due to a physician’s error -- with a plaque that will read “In Honor of Mark Heller, February 1, 1960 – January 17, 2023 – His Spirit Lives OnAnd the lodge will become home to the Peggy Heller Senior Center of Madison, named after Heller’s late wife, who for more than 20 years worked in family services.
