Local zoning and land use regulations violated state anti-discrimination law, Attorney General says

A New Jersey town will pay more than half a million dollars to resolve allegations that officials there targeted the community’s growing Orthodox Jewish population with aggressive zoning and land-use enforcement, state authorities said.

Jackson Mayor Michael Reina did not immediately return a message seeking comment, but previously said the township council “welcomes and embraces people of all faiths, races and ethnic backgrounds” and it was “time for Jackson Township to move forward.”, accused local officials of selectively enforcing housing and zoning rules, and creating new ones to discourage the Orthodox from living or worshiping in town.

Their tactics included “discriminatory surveillance” of Orthodox homes and “selectively targeting” prayer gatherings, state officials alleged. The lawsuit also targeted a 2017 zoning ordinance that state civil rights officials argued had “essentially banned the establishment of yeshivas and dormitories.”
