Thousands have sought gun carry permits in New Jersey following a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision. But no one knows how many.
New Jersey has seen a “significant” increase in applications for gun carry permits after a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling last June, but a full accounting of the flood of requests remains elusive and may not be revealed until at least this summer, the state’s Attorney General Matt Platkin told lawmakers this week.
The state judiciary has said it received 11,298 applications between when the Supreme Court decision came down last June and when Gov. Phil Murphythat sought to comply with the high court’s ruling while keeping in place as many limits as possible. It’s unclear if there is any overlap in those two figures, and authorities say they currently have no way of counting permits statewide.
