Cops across N.J start ticket crackdown on seat belt violators
Police across New Jersey are starting their annual safety crackdown on drivers and passengers in vehicles who refuse to wear a seat belt.State officials said 2021 was the deadliest year on New Jersey highways since 2007 and fatal crashes are on pace to be even higher this year.
Data compiled by State Police said there were 672 fatal crashes last year — a 20% climb over 2020 when fewer people were on the roads in the early days of theLast year, police departments in New Jersey that took part in the “Click it or Ticket” program handed out 9,755 seatbelt citations, wrote 3,936 speeding tickets and made 555 impaired driving arrests, officials said.
There will be “a particular focus on nighttime enforcement,” the attorney general’s office said. The maximum fine for a seat belt violation is $46. Nationally, 42,915 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2021 – the most since 2005 and an average of 117 deaths every day. The 145 law enforcement agencies listed below received $892,930 in grant money to help pay for the two-week seatbelt crackdown.
