U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said he has 'high expectations' for highway, transit, tunnel, port money coming to N.J. under the federal infrastructure law that is now six months old.

was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden.

While the USDOT is working on rolling out the various infrastructure programs for states and agencies to apply for, Buttigieg did name check the start of construction of a new Portal North bridge that carries the Northeast Corridor rail line over the Hackensack River in Kearny. Both Buttigieg and Gottheimer said controlling high shipping costs for containers can lower consumer prices and help stem inflation.

“We see how this project matters to this region and the entire country,” Buttigieg said. “We’re enthusiastic about developments in state houses in Trenton and Albany. I commend New York and New Jersey for getting the Gateway Development Commission up and running.” “It’s investing in those roads and highways, investments dealing with the backlog of state of good repair projects, and a vision to make them more efficient and safer at a moment when we are addressing a crisis in roadway deaths,” he said.
