The reinstated bear hunt was also the shortest since 2015 in New Jersey.
The New Jersey bear hunt saw the fewest number of bears killed in at least a decade, data provided by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection showed, but department officials say the unusual nature of the hunt makes it hard to compare to past years.
“When you track the data, compare apples to apples,” Larry Hajna, a Department of Environmental Protection spokesperson, said in an email.There are a couple of factors at play that behind October hunts having higher rates of kill than December hunts, Hanja said. Bears tend to be more active in October, and warmer weather is more appealing to hunters. This December’s hunt saw nasty rain and unseasonably cold temperatures.
“It is too early to determine to what extent the hunt will affect population projections. Generally speaking, the removal of adult bears through a regulated hunt will serve to slow population growth,” Hajna said.
