Montclair's Howe House is a landmark to early African American life.
Aminah Toler holds the keys to the James Howe House, Montclair's newest landmark. The house, which dates to 1780, was given to James Howe, a freed slave, by Nathaniel Crane. It was recently purchased by the Friends of the Howe House to be preserved.Aminah Toler stood in front of the small wooden-shingled house Montclair on Monday and dangled a set of keys like an excited first-time homebuyer who couldn’t wait to open the front door.
from the owner, Robert Van Dyk. The plan is to one day open the house to the public as an example of African American life just after slavery, and Monday’s symbolic handing over of the keys was a step toward that goal. A Black neighborhood sprung up around it. Mansions were built nearby but somehow the simple little house survived, always remaining in private hands.“Our final vision is to return the building to the community,” said Kimberly Latortue, the president of the Friends non-profit.
“That means that the family participated in the fight for freedom for African Americans in this country,” said Betty Holloday, a member who has done historical research for the group.
