I did not know, until after his death, that for years Scott had been seeking ways to ease his stress level as an aging physician in a high-stress environment. He had asked his employer repeatedly, both verbally and in writing, for ways to ease towards retirement. But his group had not addressed this human problem: the need to accommodate colleagues who, because of age or other life changes, are no longer able to tolerate their working conditions.

Scott finally admitted to his wife that he needed mental health treatment. But he insisted that his condition remain secret. He was ashamed and believed that he would be unable to ever again practice medicine should he have to admit to this problem. Furthermore, Scott’s insurance would only permit him to seek care within his own hospital system, a major source of embarrassment for him and a huge impediment to seeking timely care.
