FOUR MILE BROOK, N.S. — Situated down a dirt road, between Pictou, New Glasgow and Truro, sits an old farm that has housed horses for more than 40 years.
“I'm seeing horses doing things that I've never seen them doing my whole life,” she said. “For one thing, if you pushed on the side of their hip, this tide went up and down like jelly. And they couldn't bend their legs. They would walk like stick horses.” Becka is the last horse that Raven Jackson currently has at Earth ARC. All the horses were rehomed with volunteers or friends. Even the farm cats are being rehomed with families who need barn cats. Angela Capobianco
“We lost 10 of our oldest and, of course, the others we lost after we became Earth ARC – they didn't live as long as they normally would and still had symptoms. Some of the ones we took in from other people and managed to save were probably a little more usable. They couldn’t be ridden but were able to be worked with,” she said.
In the 1970s, before she bought the farm in Four Mile Brook in 1980, Jackson explained she lived in the valley and would take in street kids. She described at the time that it wasn’t unusual for kids to be taken out of the home as young teenagers and would either bounce around foster care homes or end up on the street.
