Red's beauty editor shares her sweetest scent memories
In the recesses of our minds, we all have an olfactory scrapbook – snapshots of memories that can be instantly recalled through even the faintest sniff of a specific scent. This is thanks to our scent receptors being so closely linked to our limbic system — the part of the brain that deals with memory, recall and emotion – and whether we realise it or not, we spend our lives accumulating our own personal library of smells.
Here we speak to industry insider and Red senior beauty editor Alexandra Friend about what those milestone scents have been in her life…I will always love patchouli – soft, warm and honeyed, and ever so slightly smoky. It takes me back to when I was 16; a particular August spent driving through the South of France with my family, when my dad first played Simon & Garfunkel to me. I had spent the summer barefoot, plaiting beads into my hair and burning incense.
When I was 17 I asked my first serious boyfriend to bring me back a bottle of perfume from a Christmas skiing trip to France. I remember loving its heady, swoony, fizzy, golden and slightly soapy profile. I can’t wear this scent now — it wears me rather than the other way around — but when I smell it, the fragrance takes me back to that particular winter: what I wore, how I wore my eyeliner, even the music I was listening to at the time.I like to smell unusual.
Today I like warm, earthy, slightly sweet perfumes that smell like an idealised version of warm skin. Maybe a bit smoky, a bit nostalgic. I think this is where the incense comes in. My favourite notes include musks, tobacco, patchouli, amber , sandalwood and a tiny bit of vanilla. And there must always be a bit of dirt! My fragrance wardrobe comes into its own in winter. If my favourite notes were fabrics, they’d be deep-piled and furry.
