A federal judge ruled in favor of Tesla last week in a case brought by a group of EV owners in relation to features of the brand’s Autopilot system, stating they must continue their claim pursuits in personal arbitration in place of a larger class-action suit. U.S. District Judge Haywood Gilliam of Oakland, California, made the decision on Saturday.
The group pointed to regular and routine claims from the company in regards to fully self-driving vehicles. The plaintiffs noted that they paid thousands of dollars for the ADAS software between 2017 and 2022, with Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving at one point costing as much as $6000 and $15,000, respectively. They argued Tesla has not delivered on the promised capabilities of the software setup, pointing to claimed accidents, injuries, and deaths related to its use.
