“This is isn’t hard. It just is.” One mother on what her 8-year-old son is teaching her about self-isolation.
Tuesday of the third week of self-isolation, I hit a wall. On March 14th, we left New York for my mother’s house in Virginia because it was a better option for us and our two boys, ages 8 and 5. The first couple of weeks passed in a blur of panic shopping, manic cleaning, constant cooking, copious eating and drinking enough to anesthetize myself from the gnawing dread that the COVID-19 era of disruption and terror would not be over anytime soon.
Later, during math class, cackling away to his classmates, he taught them how to change their backgrounds to photos of planet earth or characters from. His constant notes on the chat room were greeted with giggles until the teacher wisely turned the function off. He was still quick to press the hand-raise button and correctly answered, “What is an alchemist?”
Harry has a close-knit crew at school whom he sees with great regularity. I was worried that weeks into having only his brother as a playmate he might go bonkers. But virtual playdates generated just as much noise, joy and conversation about how to beat a strong Pokemon trainer. When I asked if he missed seeing friends in real life, Harry said no, that seeing them on the screen was better because he and his friends could simultaneously watch YouTube videos and chat to each other.
