Customers crowded Evanston’s iconic Mustard’s Last Stand restaurant Tuesday. But it was not necessarily to buy the restaurant’s famous hot dogs. Instead, they were paying tribute to Jerry Starkman, who opened the legendary food stand in the late 1960s.“We’ve really felt the love and support from the community,” Jerry’s son, Steve Starkman, said. “We’ve had so many overwhelming comments toward him and how he was such a great member of the community.

Sam Licea, who started at “Mustard’s” 15 years ago and now manages the restaurant, remembered how Jerry was proud to be inducted into the “Hot Dog Hall of Fame” at Vienna Beef. The white, red and yellow hot dog stand is not only a famous local landmark but it also has a national following thanks to the many home games held at Northwestern University’s football stadium only a few blocks away. Steve Starkman said the games attracted visitors from all over the country. He also said it’s amazing to see old customers return to the restaurant when they are in town.
