Memphis, another team on the tournament bubble, offered SMU a win within a win: a chance to not only turn its tournament hopes for the better, but do so with a boost courtesy of a team SMU head coach Tim Jankovich considered the most talented in the American Athletic Conference — without a doubt. It was a complete effort from SMU. The Mustangs were led by 27 points from star point guard Kendric Davis, who missed Wednesday’s loss to Temple with an ankle injury and whose status for Sunday was in doubt until pregame warmups. On the flipside, SMU also got eight points and seven rebounds from 6-9 forward Franklin Agunanne, a transfer from Loyola Chicago who has averaged five minutes per game this season but who finished with nearly 20 against Memphis.
Let’s start before the game. Memphis, after a short-handed loss to SMU earlier this season, came to Dallas motivated to show what it could do with a healthy lineup. The Tigers had won six in a row entering Sunday, including a 10-point road win over conference leader Houston on Saturday.
