Must the Texans trade up to get the quarterback they really want?

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, left, and Alabama QB Bryce Young share a moment at the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Saturday. When Davis Mills found Jordan Akins in the end zone with 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter of the Texans' Week 18 game against the Colts this past season, Lovie Smith had already made up his mind.

Instead of knowing they can procure whichever quarterback they want, assuming that's the direction they go, the Texans are somewhat at the mercy of the Bears, who own the top pick. It seems increasingly likely Chicago will make a trade with a quarterback-needy team, perhaps the Colts , Raiders , Falcons or Panthers .

Stroud, who is 6-3, 214 pounds, was a stud with the Buckeyes, leading them to the College Football Playoff in 2022. Over the past two seasons, he was nominated twice for the Heisman Trophy, totaling 81 touchdown passes against 12 interceptions. He completed 69.3 percent of his throws.
