to become the first Muslim woman to run for federal office in New Jersey history. Al-Khatahtbeh, 27, says the COVID-19 pandemic made it abundantly clear that the time for bold progressive solutions — like the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and student debt forgiveness — has come.
"This moment is a stark reminder that we can no longer wait for incremental change. Our leadership can and must put the health and well-being of working families and the most vulnerable among us front and center," Al-Khatahtbeh said in a statement. "I'm proud to represent a coalition of underrepresented communities in what's nothing less than a historic fight for our lives.
Al-Khatahtbeh is running a progressive primary challenge against 16-term incumbent Rep. Frank Pallone to represent the Garden State’s 6th Congressional District. She recently sat down with Katie Couric to talk about the change she wants to see, growing up as a Muslim immigrant in New Jersey, and running an entirely digital campaign during the pandemic.
