The span of the bill at downtown L.A.’s convention center ran from appearances by Wonder, Valerie Simpson and ongoing editions of the Temptations, the Four Tops and the Isley Brothers to a segment that featured three artists in their 20s that are up for best new artist at the Grammys. The occasion was to honor Motown Records founder Berry Gordy and singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson for their musical achievements and philanthropic efforts as MusiCares Persons of the Year on Friday night, the first time the charitable organization honored two individuals in the same year.
