Director Tearepa Kahi came to Deadline’s TIFF studio with actors Cliff Curtis and Jay Ryan to discuss their new film, a provocative thriller set in the Ruatoki Valley in the Tūhoe region of New Zealand. Inspired by a true story, Kahi’s film is presented as a “response” to, rather than a reconstruction of, that particular incident, in which police raided an Indigenous community in search of non-existent domestic terrorists.
For Ryan, the film touches a nerve with a power that transcends its remote and perhaps exotic setting. “I think a lot of people can relate to the idea of someone smashing your door down and coming into your home, or your community, unannounced, in the middle of the night or the middle of the day. Anyone can imagine that.”
