Gov. Phil Murphy is again lobbying for another package of bills aiming to further tighten New Jersey’s already strict gun laws.
Murphy held Tuesday’s event exactly one year after he announced the proposals. In the year since, he said, 1,359 people have been shot in New Jersey, and 250 have died.He specifically noted the death of a 9-year-old girl who was killed in Trenton last month as others fought in her apartment complex.
“These bills, with all due respect, the definition of common sense,” Murphy said. “The time for excuses is over. Everyone of these bills deserves a vote.”Require gun owners in the state to store firearms and ammunition separately in a lockbox or safe. It would also stiffen penalties for those who fail to do so.
Require people who buy guns in the state to renew their purchaser ID card every four years and show proof of taking a course on safe handling and storage of firearms. Raise the age at which a person in the state is eligible to receive a firearms purchaser identification card used to purchase shotguns and rifles from 18 to 21.
