Mufasa The Lion King’s Scar & Mufasa Booked The Same Follow-Up Without Telling Each Other

Summary Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King won’t be released until December 2024, but viewers can already see its two stars sharing screen time thanks to their already-released follow-up project. The Lion King live-action adaptation was released in 2019, boasting a star-studded cast and directed by The Mandalorian’s Jon Favreau. Shortly afterward, the prequel was announced, with high expectations set in part thanks to the news that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins was set to direct.

Aaron Pierre: We were speaking about that today. We just had to do the math and the chronology, and actually, Lion King happened first. What's really funny is we both signed on, said yes to it, were still doing Lion King, and we never once spoke about it. I kept looking at it. I think I told Barry one day; I was like, "I'm pretty sure Aaron's doing this show with me, but we have not said anything. Do you know?" He was like, "What? Y'all are playing who?"

Malcolm X and Dr. King only met once in their lives so, fittingly, Pierre and Harrison only have one scene together in Genius: MLK/X. The series is split between the lives of the two men, guaranteeing lots of screen time for both actors, but it only hints at how Harrison and Pierre will play off each other as Scar and Mufasa.
