The Sun must take 'definitive action' over Jeremy Clarkson's Meghan 'hate' article, MPs insist. Taking the column off its website has not satisfied the title's critics
prompted complaints from more than 65 MPs who demanded “definitive action” against the former Top Gear presenter.
A spokesperson said: “We do not share the views aired by Jeremy Clarkson in his recent column. His comments do not reflect our values. But a full apology has not been forthcoming and MPs, led by Tory Caroline Nokes, chairwoman of the Women and Equalities Select Committee, have called on The Sun’s editor Victoria Newton to prevent further “violent misogynistic language” directed at Meghan.
The total number of complaints so far for one article was more than all that IPSO, the press regulator, received in 2021, which amounted to 14,355. “He could be given a token suspension from The Sun and brought back after Christmas. But Jeremy also has a Sunday Times column which is hugely popular. He could keep that and give up The Sun if pushed,” a senior figure suggested.
The Sun recorded a loss of £51m last year, attributed to the Covid pandemic and the shift in advertising spending from print to online. News UK has also paid out millions of pounds to end phone-hacking legal cases, whilst always maintaining that no interception took place at The Sun.
