Ottawa—Eastern Canadian grain farmers are applauding a call by the Commons agriculture committee for a return to their members of all the tariffs on Russian fertilizers imposed last spring in retaliation for the Ukraine invasion.

The committee’s report specifically called for the return of nearly $34 million in tariffs collected by the federal government on Russian fertilizer imports. It also called on the government to not impose mandatory fertilizer emission targets and recognize already achieved sustainability efforts on farms and programs such as the 4Rs. It should also look at encouraging increased domestic fertilizer production.

“Farmers want to protect the soil, water and air. Without a healthy environment, we will lose our family businesses. We also want to produce as much food as we can. We understand that balance and we strive for it daily. We need the government to reduce the conflicting objectives they have around food growth and production.”

Christian Overbeek, President, Grain Farmers of Quebec, welcomed the committee’s recommendations to strengthen Canada’s capacity to respond to food insecurity in the world. “The agrifood system must not be taken for granted when geopolitical and climatic risks as well as societal expectations weigh so heavily on the shoulders of farmers today.”
