Yukon has become a haven for aspiring filmmakers seeking inspiration, funding and community.
Created in partnership with filmmaker Tova Krentzman, the fire tower documentary aims to paint a picture of the region’s landscapes, says Sheff, and the people who reside there. “It’s a character piece about the unique individuals who choose this solitary remote work in the wilderness. How humans find more connection to themselves and their environment when they disconnect from society,” she says.
For Milner, filmmaking is a way to introduce those issues to a wider audience. “I wanted to change people’s minds through the power of storytelling,” she says. Switching directions again, her recent work is a kids’ web series with puppets set in the boreal forest. When pitching the idea to a broadcaster, they asked about her qualifications working with kids. She had to shake her head — raising two kids and 15 years of watching children’s shows wasn’t enough, she thought?
