Alberta is planning to change the way it delivers victim services — a move which is raising concerns among some in the sector.

“Our units are so strong … because we work within the communities that we live in, and we know the people and we build those relationships. It’d be harder to do that if you’re stretched farther distances.”

The province says the new regional model will standardize levels of service across the province, adding a “layer” of professional support staff to each new board to provide “full-time dedicated services to frontline victim caseworkers, for strategic, supervisory, logistical, human resource, financial, legal, and administrative assistance.”Article content

A victim services group who spoke to Postmedia said the organization does not oppose the policy shift and acknowledges the status quo is “not sustainable.” The group intends to provide feedback to the ministry as it implements the changes.
