On Sunday at Globe Life Field, the Guardians, in their first year under a their new name, came out of nowhere to win the AL Central.
When problems did arise, they had just enough veterans to keep the team pointed in the right direction. They also had Francona and a veteran coaching staff. Cleveland is headed to the postseason for the sixth in Francona’s 10-year tenure as manager.
Francona loves his coaches. To show how much he respects them, he had them all gathered about him on the top step to as James Karinchak recorded the final out of the clincher on a foul pop to catcher Luke Maile by Josh Smith. The Guardians also had Jose Ramirez, one of the best players in baseball, having one of his most productive years. But it wasn’t just Ramirez’s numbers that made a difference, it was his commitment to the organization when he signed a seven-year $141 million contract in April when he was close to being traded.
“We came into the year know that we needed this guy,” said Hedges. “What he did to show that he wants to be here for the long haul . The way he leads by example. The way he plays every day.
