‘Moulin Rouge’ musical tour will open in Chicago later in March due to COVID concerns

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” has postponed its Chicago opening by about a month, according to an announcement Thursday from presenter Broadway in Chicago.

The Broadway musical, which launches its North American tour in Chicago, will now play March 19 to May 14 at the Nederlander Theatre . It had previously been slated for Feb. 26 to April 24. The show’s producers said the change was “due to the rapidly-changing COVID landscape. ... The change in engagement dates have allowed the producers to make the proactive decision to slightly delay the start of the rehearsal and production period due to the fast-moving omicron variant.

The jukebox musical is based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 movie. Ticketholders for affected performances will be notified by email with their new performance dates. Broadway in Chicago can be reached at 800-775-2000 and The COVID-related schedule change joins a number of similar announcements Wednesday from Chicago theaters and arts presenters, including:announced a schedule change for the world premiere of “The Notebook,” now slated to be presented in the Yard Theater on Navy Pier Sept. 6 to Oct. 16, 2022. The musical, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, has music and lyrics by singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson and book by Bekah Brunstetter. It had been slated to begin mid-March.
