Nineteen-year old had his motorcycle impounded and was charged with excessive speeding.

A motorcyclist with a learner’s permit had his bike impounded when he was clocked doing 189 kilometres per hour in a 90 km/h zone near Bench Road in Cowichan Bay.

The B.C. Highway Patrol officer was alerted by the sound of the roaring engine about 9 p.m. on May 12.The officer approached the rider, a 19-year-old Duncan man, once the motorcycle was turned off. It was impounded and the teen was charged with excessive speeding. “Speaking as a motorcycle rider both in my personal time and while working, I can attest that riding is a great experience,” said Staff Sgt. Adam Tallboy, acting officer in charge the B.C. Highway Patrol on Vancouver Island. “This experience, however, comes with high levels of vulnerability and responsibility.”

Tallboy said riders need to be extra vigilant, ride responsibly and “know that you just don’t have that degree of protection surrounding you that an enclosed motor vehicle would otherwise provide.” The B.C. Highway Patrol issued a reminder that May is High-Risk Driving Awareness Month in the province.
