🔴 The eight biggest unions in the country have agreed a day of action on Thursday that could see fiery clashes and test Emmanuel Macron’s authority
to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 by 2030, which is expected to be the signature legislative bill in the President’s second term of office.
Protesters hold a banner that says ‘retirement’ during a demonstration in Rennes on Tuesday after the French government unveiled its pension reform plan Even Laurent Berger, from the moderate union CFDT, called the reform “one of the most brutal of the last 30 years”. The President, who is widely seen as aloof and insensitive, could also become a lightning rod for public anger. The reform must also pass the National Assembly, where Mr Macron’s centrist Ensemble coalition government no longer enjoys an outright majority.
