House fires are most likely to happen in December -- between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Holiday decorations are one of the main culprits. How to stay safe:
There are several steps that FEMA suggests you take to stay safe.
First, water your live Christmas tree every day. A dry tree is a fire hazard and trees too close to heat sources cause one in every 4 winter fires. Also, unplug your tree at night or set a timer to turn it off, especially if you still haven’t upgraded to LED lights. Speaking of lights, make sure you are using the right ones. Some are only for indoor or outdoor use, not both.Finally, keep lit candles away from decorations and anything that can burn. More than a third of home decoration fires are started by candles.
