Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match supervising producer Rick Morales discusses what Joel McHale brings to Johnny Cage and how the '80s made things rad.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Mortal Kombat goes full '80s in Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match, which tackles Johnny Cage's R-rated origin story in animated form. Written by video game co-creator Ed Boon and directed by Ethan Spaulding, the latest outing in the world of Mortal Kombat focuses on Johnny's Hollywood fame and eventual rise to becoming a legendary combatant.
Rick Morales: Oh, yeah. You just named one of the big ones with Big Trouble, for sure. Then there were so many '80s films that we talked about in this. I mean, Lethal Weapon, Karate Kid, Rocky. We basically just pillaged our childhood and made the type of movie that we never dreamed we might be able to. Rick Morales: Loosely. The thought behind this stuff is that it does actually interconnect.
Rick Morales: Well, everything. He embodies Johnny Cage so entirely, and not just with his wit and his mannerisms and his sarcasm, but his physical presence too. When you meet him in person, you're like, "Damn, this guy could be Johnny Cage." I think it's just such a nice fit for him that it's one of the things when we did the first film and we cast him and it was like, "Oh my gosh, this guy, he works really well. This is the perfect, perfect role for him.
Rick Morales: Yeah, we wanted to flesh him out as a fully formed character. You get hints of him in the other films, and he is kind of like a sarcastic jerk and arrogant and all that. But we wanted to show that also he's a good person and where does this come from? How does it develop? And can he change in a way? I think those are all things that we wanted to explore with this character.
Rick Morales: One of our goals always is to show things that people are familiar with from the games so that fans of this property know what that thing is that they're seeing. And then the other part of it is for us to try to expand out to maybe people that aren't familiar with these characters in this world and all that, but you know we have to be respectful of the material that we're handling.
For me, it's like, "Have them use the powers, let them be who they are, and just embrace that and go with it and have fun with it." And that all goes back to the games. Because I know when I'm playing at Sub-Zero or Liu Kang, I'm just sitting there spamming my ice bolts over and over.
