Temperatures fell to some all-time lows leading up to Christmas. Unfortunately, 245 sea turtles felt the wintry wrath. But the Texas State Aquarium Wildlife Rescue Team came to their aid, admitting them into its Wildlife Rescue Program.
A cold front on Dec. 23 brought temps in South Texas to below freezing. So, when water and air temps drastically dropped in shallow bays and estuaries like Laguna Madre, sea turtles grew to be sluggish and couldn’t even swim.
“Rescuers have been finding cold-stunned turtles throughout the Laguna Madre and other bays and estuaries over the past few days and have been bringing them to the Aquarium’s Rescue Center for treatment,” according to the Texas State Aquarium. “Padre Island National Seashore, NOAA Fisheries, U.S.
When the turtles arrived, the rescue team monitored their health and immediately began treating them for cold-stunning. The aquarium said some turtles have strengthened enough to be put in an emergency rehabilitation pool. All others are being kept in a warming room for observation until they’re ready for the pool.
“To accommodate the turtles, Aquarium staff created an emergency rehabilitation pool made of repurposed dam flood control system. These sea turtles are being housed next to the remaining loggerhead sea turtles that TSA has been caring for since July,” the aquarium explained. The turtles will remain under the aquarium’s care until they’re healthy enough to be released. As temperatures get a little warmer, the rescue team projects they should release a majority of the turtles back into the Gulf after a few more days of rehabilitation.
