The Texas Legislature passed a bill updating the SNAP vehicle asset test, which places a limit on the value of a household’s cars to qualify for food benefits.
Updating these minimums was long overdue, she added. The limit for additional cars hadn’t been updated in 50 years, while the limit for the first vehicle was last updated in 2001.
“It’s a sort of a simple, administrative change that just makes sure that people aren’t having to wait to afford food when they leave the system,” Cole said. “And that just increases their chances of being able to reenter successfully.” “You might as well qualify them before they leave prison,” West said. “So once they leave, there’s somewhat of a seamless transition from incarceration to back into society.”With more people depending on food banks after the pandemic, the Legislature also passed two bills that make it easier for these organizations to distribute nutrition to those who need it.
