As the UK’s annual National HIV Testing Week continues, the UK Health Security Agency (HSA) recently reported heterosexual people are now diagnosed with HIV at a higher rate than gay and bisexual men.
reports in December 2021, 50 percent of all new HIB diagnoses were in both heterosexual men and women, while gay and bisexual men accounted for 45 percent.
HSA also revealed heterosexual people are also more likely to be diagnosed during a late stage when the virus has already started wreaking havoc on their immune systems. In 2020, 55 percent of heterosexual men and 51 percent of heterosexual women were diagnosed with HIV in a later stage, while 29 percent of gay or bisexual men were diagnosed late.
Testing for HIV reportedly dropped for all groups during the COVID-19 pandemic, but especially for heterosexual people by 33 percent. This is all the while testing only dropped for gay or bisexual men by 7 percent.
