“But from a regional perspective, those airlines and markets that use regional jets, regional pilots, that is really constrained. So, we’ve seen a reduction in service within the Maritimes, specifically, and even to Newfoundland, compared to pre-pandemic levels and it’s not related to demand, it’s just the ability of the airlines to provide those services.”3.
“Those flights are performing really well, and we’re working with the airlines to increase the frequency of those services.” “Since the pandemic, we’ve seen a big clawback in the number of routes and passenger flows from the region. Part of it is coming back but there’s also route losses, that’s not great for business, you can’t fly from Fredericton to Halifax anymore, you have to go to Toronto first,” Bannon said. “So, it doesn’t make sense for some of the short flights, and business travel can be a challenge.”
“It’s a challenge for them in revenue, of course, with fewer flights. They’re going to have to continue to find ways to get people out of their cities efficiently, working with the airlines.” When the airport authority presented at HRM’s Community Planning and Economic Development committee last week, it said “direct and spin-off airport activities created nearly 19,000 full-time equivalent jobs across the province in 2022, contributing $997 million to Nova Scotia’s total labour income.”
