Turns out the moon god Khonshu, once admitted that the Punisher might have actually made a better Moon Knight than Marc Spector.
While Marc Spector serves the Egyptian moon god, Khonshu as Moon Knight, the deity thinks one other Marvel hero could do the job better. Moon Knight #10 featured the titular hero following up on the death of his brother, Randall, by confronting the man who killed him. The investigation gave Khonshu the opportunity to see another brutal hero in action who could potentially serve him better than the current Moon Knight.
Marc Spector has been fighting in Khonshu’s stead since he first appeared in Werewolf By Night #32 by Doug Moench, Don Perlin, Howie Perlin, Phil Rachelson, and Ray Holloway. After being gunned down, Spector was revived by the celestial figure in order to be his vessel and protect the travelers of the night from evil. As the Fist of Khonshu, Moon Knight developed a reputation for his brutal methods that have made him a pariah among other heroes.
It should be noted that Khonshu and Marc’s relationship is tenuous to say the least, and the god often manipulates Spector in order to get what he wants from him. In fact, in this particular instance, Khonshu attempts to goad Moon Knight into exacting vengeance on the Punisher over his insanely high body count. But Khonshu may be more honest than he realizes and may have a good point that, in another world, Frank Castle could be a highly effective Moon Knight.
Much like Moon Knight, the Punisher doesn’t find himself favored among the superhero community due to his extreme methods of fighting crime. But where Marc often finds himself conflicted over his role, the Punisher is resolute in his mission. Castle abandoned the idea of a normal life after his family was murdered, and that’s exactly the sort of one-track line of thinking that could serve Khonshu well.
However, it’s exactly as Khonshu said. However good a Moon Knight he’d be, Marvel's most lethal hero is already spoken for by a much darker force.
