The Gabarus Lighthouse in 2015. FILE.GABARUS, N.S. — As part of Nova Scotia Polish Heritage Month, a sundial will be unveiled on Saturday at the Gabarus Lighthouse.
The sundial was made in honour of Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus and his 550th birthday this year. In the 16th century, Copernicus created the first mathematical model showing the sun at the centre of the solar system, rather than Earth. Blacksmith Shawn Taylor led the construction of the sundial, with the concept provided by the Cape Breton Polish community and the Gabarus Lightkeepers Society.
It will be unveiled at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The St. Mary's Polish Parish will also hold a mini-retreat on Saturday morning before the unveiling. Anyone is welcome to sign up by emailing
