A loose monkey has been spotted in Central Florida, with the elusive simian recently seen scaring a woman working at a Popeyes drive-thru window.after seeing the monkey on Wednesday morning.Bialobos said the monkey appeared near the restaurant on Enterprise Road, in Orange City, at around 9:30 a.m.
She noted that the monkey appeared to know how to navigate the streets, avoiding a busy road before disappearing from view. The sighting came less than two hours before the Orange City Police Department revealed they received multiple calls about the monkey roaming the streets.“The monkey… has been identified as a wild Rhesus Macaque monkey,” police said in a statement. “Please DO NOT feed or attempt to capture these monkeys!”
City officials said they have been in contact with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regarding the loose animal.The monkey was seen Wednesday morning near the Popeye’s restaurant on Enterprise Road.Police have urged residents to contact the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-FWCC if they come across the monkey.
The state FWCC lists the rhesus macaque as a “nonnative species in Florida and is not protected except by anti-cruelty law.”, located about 60 miles away, which was estimated to hold 190 macaques in 2015, according to the FWCC.
