Commissioner Rob Manfred is trying to zero in on just what the players want in new basic agreement.

Tony Clark, executive director of the Major League Players Association.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It’s clear the Major League Players Association wants sweeping changes in the basic agreement. It’s just as clear that the owners wouldn’t mind if things stayed just as they are.

Is it a reduction in revenue sharing for small and mid-market teams? The players believe some teams receiving revenue sharing aren’t using that money to put a better team on the field. The union believes that’s costing players jobs. On Thursday, Commissioner Rob Manfred met with reporters for the first time since he imposed the lockout on Dec. 2. He was asked if there was one thing that the players wanted above all else. An example of the prorated pay the players received during the 60-game season of 2020 was given.

The two sides met Saturday to discuss these and other issues. The owners made a proposal that addressed most of the issues on the players’ wish list, but the players were reportedly not impressed. It means the start of spring training on Feb. 15 will be delayed as will the start of the exhibition season on Feb. 26. A delay to the regular season could be next.Manfred said the players request for a reduction in revenue sharing among small and mid-market teams is not going to happen.
