It's hard to argue with what the Blue Jays did at the deadline but easier to argue with what they failed to do. ➡️
If you're a Toronto Blue Jays fan, there's a pretty good chance that you're not happy with what the team did at the trade deadline. That's because in the runup to this event, there was so much discussion about how the team would add a right handed bat. And for an offense that's been in the middle of the pack for the entirety of the season and has some match-up issues with left handed pitching, that's a reasonable thing to think.
And since joining the Blue Jays, Cabrera has been outstanding and gives them another option from the left side, outside of Tim Mayza. The second deal was probably the one that made people think the Blue Jays were in for a bigger deadline. And that's when they went out and acquired Jordan Hicks, probably the best rental bullpen arm on the market.
But at the end of the day, it didn't really determine what they were going to do next. This team now has a very strong bullpen. And when Jordan Romano comes back, when they combine Romano with Hicks, they'll have some of the best late inning high leverage arms in the Major Leagues. This has rarely been a strength for this team heading into the playoffs, and they have a totally different look with Cabrera, Hicks, and the guys they already have in tow.
